MRL’s 80th Anniversary and Robert Baldwin’s Retirement Celebration

On July 10, 2026, the Minerals Research Laboratory (MRL) in Asheville, North Carolina, opened its doors for a milestone celebration that honored both an extraordinary legacy and an exceptional career. Employees, alumni, industry partners, community leaders, friends, and family gathered to commemorate MRL’s 80th anniversary while celebrating the retirement of Robert “Bob” Baldwin, who’s remarkable 50 years of dedicated service helped shape the laboratory into the respected institution it is today.
As Lab Supervisor and Engineering Research Technician, Bob Baldwin became a cornerstone of MRL, known not only for his technical expertise and unwavering commitment but also for his mentorship, problem-solving abilities, and passion for advancing mineral research in North Carolina. His five decades of service represent an extraordinary career dedicated to innovation, excellence, and supporting the mining and minerals industry.
The celebration began with welcoming remarks from Luis Chia, Director of the Minerals Research Laboratory, Phil Mintz, Executive Director of NC State Industry Extension Services, and Wendy Lang, Assistant Executive Director of Industry Extension Services. Together, they reflected on MRL’s eight decades of scientific achievement, industry collaboration, and economic impact while recognizing the countless contributions Bob made throughout his career.
One of the day’s most memorable moments came when Phil Mintz presented Bob with an official proclamation declaring July 10, 2026, as “Minerals Research Laboratory Day,” signed by Asheville Mayor Esther E. Manheimer. The recognition honored both the laboratory’s longstanding contributions to North Carolina’s mining and mineral industries and the dedicated people who have made its success possible.
The surprises continued when Wendy Lang presented Bob with a beautifully framed Order of the Longleaf Pine, North Carolina’s highest civilian honor, awarded to individuals whose extraordinary service and accomplishments have made lasting contributions to the state. The presentation was met with heartfelt applause from the crowd as colleagues, family members, and friends celebrated a career that has left an enduring mark on MRL and the manufacturing and minerals community.
Following a celebratory lunch, guests were invited to tour the laboratory during an open house, offering a behind-the-scenes look at MRL’s unique facilities, research capabilities, and the innovative work that has supported industries across North Carolina for generations. Visitors had the opportunity to learn about the laboratory’s history, its specialized equipment, and the talented team carrying its mission into the future.
The festivities concluded in unforgettable fashion as a spirited community parade—led by a lively brass band—made its way through the streets of Asheville. The joyful procession served as a fitting tribute to both MRL’s 80 years of service and Bob Baldwin’s remarkable half-century career. It was a celebration filled with pride, gratitude, music, laughter, and memories, honoring a legacy of excellence while looking ahead to the laboratory’s next chapter.
