NC State University Minerals Research Laboratory Celebrates 80

Tucked into the Blue Ridge Mountains in Asheville, North Carolina, the Minerals Research Laboratory (MRL) is a powerhouse of applied mineral science. An 80-Year History Rooted in Mineral Innovation

The MRL was established in Asheville in 1946 through a partnership between the State of North Carolina and the Tennessee Valley Authority. Since joining NC State’s School of Engineering in 1954 and later transitioning to IES in 2004, the lab has focused on applied research that directly benefits the mineral industry.

This rich history has helped shape Western North Carolina’s legacy as a center for industrial mineral production, with the region known for resources such as feldspar, clay, mica and more.

What Does the Minerals Research Laboratory Do?
